A VIN cannot tell you everything. It will not replace a vehicle history check, a proper inspection, or a test drive. But it is the reference number that ties those checks to the car in front of you. This section is most useful for a simple sense check. If an advert claims a car is one make but the VIN begins with a code assigned to another manufacturer, the description needs explaining immediately.

Characters 4 to 9: the vehicle description

The middle section describes the vehicle. Depending on the manufacturer, these characters can identify the model range, body type, engine, restraint system, transmission or trim level. Some manufacturers encode a great deal of information; others use internal codes that are difficult to interpret without their database.

The ninth character is often a check digit on vehicles built to North American specifications. It is calculated from the other characters to help detect invalid VINs. It is less consistently useful on European-market cars, so do not reject a vehicle solely because an online tool cannot validate that position.

What matters is whether the decoded description broadly matches the car being offered. If the VIN suggests a diesel estate but you are viewing a petrol hatchback, there is a serious question to answer. More subtle differences, such as trim level, may result from market variations or factory options, so verify them with the manufacturer or a specialist rather than guessing.

Characters 10 to 17: year, plant and serial number

The final section usually contains production information and the vehicle’s unique serial sequence. On many cars, the 10th character represents the model year. This is particularly common on North American VINs.

For European vehicles, model-year coding is not always applied in the same way. A car first registered in 2018 might have been built in late 2017, and an imported vehicle may use a different coding convention altogether. The V5C registration date is not necessarily the build date.

The 11th character can identify the manufacturing plant, while characters 12 to 17 normally form the serial number. These final digits are what distinguish one otherwise identical car from another. They are especially important when ordering parts, checking recalls, or running a history report.

What VIN decoding can tell you – and what it cannot

Decoding provides an identity check, not a condition report. It can help you establish whether the car is plausibly the make, model, engine and year described by the seller. It may also help identify whether the vehicle was originally built for another market.

It cannot reliably tell you whether the car has been written off, clocked, stolen, poorly repaired, financed, flooded, or maintained properly. Those risks require separate evidence. A clean-looking VIN is not a clean history.

This distinction matters when buying privately. A dishonest seller may accurately show you the VIN from the car while omitting accident damage, outstanding finance, mileage discrepancies or an insurance write-off category. VIN decoding warning signs worth taking seriously
